Consumer Price Index

July 2013

Consumer Price Index

On a seasonally adjusted basis the June CPI-U for all items increased 0.5 percent over the month. The index increased 1.8 percent from June 2012, not seasonally adjusted. The monthly increase was dominated by an increase in energy prices of 3.4 percent over the month. While energy prices can be volatile, much of the year we've seen decreases of a similar magnitude in the category resulting in an over-the-year increase of 3.2 percent. Food prices were nearly flat over the month, increasing 0.2 percent. In the index for all items less food and energy, results for various categories were mostly less than 0.5 percent up or down. Apparel, which increased 0.9 percent, was the exception.
