Caring for yourself and your family: benefits and eligibility

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Minnesota’s Paid Leave program will provide financial support and job protection for individuals who need time away from work to care for themselves and their loved ones.

There are two main types of leave—medical and family—and individuals can take up to 12 weeks for each, for a combined maximum of 20 weeks in a benefit year. In each instance, a health care provider or authorized professional must certify the need for leave and the amount of time off work that is required.
