  • Alias Grace. Margaret Atwood. Audio. A fictional portrait of Grace Marks, a sixteen-year-old Canadian domestic who was convicted in the murder of her employer and his mistress in 1843. In prison, Grace is hypnotized by a psychiatrist to help her recall the murders and reveal whether she is a monster or a victim.
  • Number the Stars. Lois Lowry. Audio, Large Print, Braille. For ten-year-old Annemarie, life in occupied Copenhagen until the Nazi persecution of Danish Jews begins. Annemarie's family helps a Jewish friend by having her pose as Annemarie's dead sister. When a packet must be taken to the captain of a ship smuggling Jews to Sweden, Annemarie learns that being brave means not thinking about the dangers, just thinking about what you must do. For grades 3-6. Newbery Medal.
  • Oscar & Lucinda. Peter Carey. Audio. Set in England and Australia in the 1860s. Tells the story of love, commerce, religion, and colonization in the Victorian age. The main characters are Oscar, an Oxford-educated Church of England minister; and Lucinda, an eccentric Australian who sinks her inheritance into a glass factory. Booker prize winner.
  • Cloudsplitter. Russell Banks. Audio. Fictional account of John Brown's crusade against slavery culminating in his band's raid on the armory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in 1859. Presented as lengthy letters by Owen Brown, John's son, in response to a history professor's inquiry about the abolitionist forty years after Brown's execution.
  • Speakers of the Dead. J. Aaron Sanders. Audio, Large Print. In 1843, Walt Whitman's friend Lena Stowe is hanged for the murder of her husband, Abraham. Walt vows to exonerate her. When Walt's estranged boyfriend Henry returns to New York, they uncover a link between body snatching and Abraham's murder.
  • In the Time of Butterflies. Julia Alvarez. Audio, Braille. Set in the Dominican Republic under the regime of dictator Rafael Trujillo. Three of the four Mirabal sisters were murdered for their part in the struggle for freedom. Alvarez depicts the everyday lives of the women, martyred for their courage and beliefs.
