Electricians in Central Minnesota

As recently as the 1930s, only 10 percent of people living on farms and in rural areas had electricity. Advances in power and technology have spread across the nation and state since then, making our need for and reliance on electricity impossible to ignore. We owe much of our progress to electricians, who brought power into almost every household in the nation.

Central Minnesota is home to about 1,250 electricians, which is the largest concentration in Greater Minnesota of these powerful jobs, according to our Occupational Employment Statistics data tool.

Electricians enjoy great wages and a variety of interesting work. Electricians are most closely associated with the construction industry, with 84 percent of them in the 13-county Central Minnesota planning region employed by construction companies.

This leaves more than 16 percent of electricians working in other industries such as manufacturing, trade, transportation, and utilities, and public administration. Electricians employed in industries other than construction earn higher wages. Since hitting an employment low in 2010, the construction industry has been growing rapidly in Central Minnesota.

The most recent Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages data shows that in 2014 the construction industry in Central Minnesota recorded the highest second quarter employment since 2007. Our Employment Outlook tool provides an even more optimistic forecast, projecting more than 2 percent higher projected growth for electricians in Central Minnesota than the average for all other occupations. This is great news for all electricians, regardless of their employing industry.
