The federal government's Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (Español) created the ITIN to allow foreign nationals and individuals without a social security number, including individuals without an immigration status, to comply with U.S. tax laws and pay U.S. taxes. An ITIN is not a social security number and does not provide legal immigration status or work authorization. Individuals who do not have a SSN but do have an ITIN may also be able to open bank accounts.
