Fun with Statistics

By Dave Senf
October 2021

Monthly private average hourly earnings (nominal value and nominal value relative to 2008) are compared to percent change in private employment relative to 2008 for states selected. The visualization gives an historical picture from 2008 to 2020 of how private average hourly wages and employment have changed over the last 12 years (2008 - 2020) through the Great Recession and Pandemic Recession. Employment declines during recessions are clearly shown as well as increases in wages over time.

The visualization is based on data from the Current Employment Statistics program which can be found at mn.gov/deed/data/data-tools/current-employment-statistics.
