JOLTS Update

By Oriane Casale
June 2023

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey conducted by the BLS shows that the number of job openings increased in April after three straight months of decline in Minnesota. Job openings, at 204,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis, are up 25,000 from March and but down 31,000 from one year ago or 13%. This compares to a decline of 14% at the national level over the year.

Minnesota had 0.4 unemployed workers for each job vacancy in April. This is down from March, which was at 0.5 but up from one year ago which was at 0.3 unemployed workers for every job opening. This indicates that Minnesota's labor market is extremely tight, making it difficult for some employers to find workers to fill open positions. Minnesota ranked 5th tied with 17 other states on this measure in April.  Nationwide, there are 0.6 unemployed workers for each job vacancy, which is level from March 2023 and up slightly from 0.5 one year ago.
