Manufacturing in the Northeast
The area lost a large number of manufacturing firms and jobs in the 1970s and 1980s, but Manufacturing continues to play an important role in the region today. Many local manufacturers have been planning expansions recently, such as Tritec, a Virginia steel fabricator.
Measuring Minnesota
Earlier this year the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development announced that preliminary jobs numbers for February had put us near our pre-recession peak of 2,780,000, marking an important signpost on the road to economic recovery. How does our economic recovery — which is well underway — compare to our neighbors in the Upper Midwest?
Industrial Analysis
Employment estimates produced a seventh consecutive monthly gain with the February 2013 employment gain measuring 14,500. Minnesota has added 59,500 jobs since July 2012.
Minnesota Economic Indicators
The Minnesota Index soared for the fourth consecutive month, increasing 0.7 percent in February 2013. That’s the biggest one month jump since October 2010 and the 13th highest on record dating to 1979.
Consumer Price Index
On a seasonally adjusted basis the February 2013 CPI-U for all items increased 0.7 percent over the month. The index increased 2.0 percent from February 2012, not seasonally adjusted.

The Local Area Unemployment Statistics or LAUS tool provides labor force, employment, and unemployment estimates.
Current Employment Statistics
The Current Employment Statistics (CES) Program, a monthly survey of 5,900 nonfarm employers, provides monthly data on employment by industry. The data offer a snapshot of the health of the economy.
