In 2014 DEED's work to strengthen talent, innovation and trade in the state made tremendous headway. Clearly, Minnesota veterans embody an enormous amount of talent. Here are some ways DEED burnished their credentials even more.
Veterans Licensing and Certification:Minnesota was among six states awarded a National Governors Association Policy Academy Grant to develop processes and procedures for granting college credit for military experience and training. Minnesota selected three Military Occupational Codes - Peace Officers, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Paramedics - based on current labor market information. More returning veterans will be able to take the State's Peace Officers Standards Training exam, making them eligible for employment with Minnesota's law enforcement agencies.
Minnesota was one of four states to pilot a program to provide no-cost hotel rooms to veterans seeking employment. DEED works with the Hilton Hotels Worldwide and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies in this program.
The 2014 Veterans Career Fair beat all records. More than 145 employers and more than 800 job seekers attended. This is the state's largest fair aimed at getting veterans back to work.
More than 200 Minnesota cities, towns, counties and businesses have come together to support veterans and their families. DEED's veterans employment representatives work closely with both Yellow Ribbon communities and businesses, and many sit on the boards or steering committees of these organizations.
This project brings major corporations -- Target, Best Buy, US Bank, 3M, Medtronic, United Health Group, Ecolab and St. Jude Medical -- together to discuss recruitment and onboarding of veteran employees. Project Patriot is an innovative partnership between General Mills, DEED Veterans Employment Program and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.
