Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed Oct. 2-8, 2016 as Manufacturing Week in Minnesota. Why should you care?
Because manufacturing is a vital part of Minnesota’s economic health. One in eight jobs in Minnesota is in manufacturing – and these tend to be high-quality jobs that pay well. The average manufacturing job paid $63,251 in 2015. That’s almost $9,300 – or 15 percent – higher than the typical job in Minnesota.
“Sustaining jobs in manufacturing is critical to our economy,” says DEED Commissioner Shawntera Hardy. “It offers pathways to rewarding careers that pay family-sustaining wages.”
Manufacturing contributed $48.2 billion to the state’s economy in 2015. Minnesota has 317,200 jobs in manufacturing. But when you add in jobs in other industries that are dependent on manufacturing, that impact rises to 914,000 jobs.
